Best robot mops of 2019

As hated household chores go, mopping is probably despised more than even vacuuming (though let’s agree cleaning toilets tops the list). The dirty water, the back-aching labor, and the fact that most homes have far less moppable flooring than they do carpeting makes the job all too easy to neglect. As with vacuuming, though, robotics has come to rescue. Robot mops don’t require cumbersome buckets or ringing out filthy mop heads. All you need to do is fill their tank…

HMD Global promises ‘future proof’ 5G Nokia phones

HMD Global has confirmed at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit that many of its upcoming Nokia branded smartphones will be 5G ready and run on the Snapdragon 765 platform.  The Snapdragon 865 will be the flagship high-end mobile processor from Qualcomm for 2020 but it doesn’t have an integrated 5G modem. Curiously, the lower-powered 765 does have one integrated, meaning Nokia phones with the chip should all be 5G compatible. This is in line with a presentation given by Juho Sarvikas, chief…

Motorola commits to releasing 5G smartphones in 2020

At Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, Motorola committed to releasing 5G compatible smartphones with the newly announced Snapdragon 865 and 765 processors. The recently launched foldable Razr phone will not be one of these as it runs the mid-range Snapdragon 710 – likely because it’s been in production for so long, and to keep the price palatable. Adding 5G to the handset would have increased its already high $1,500 price tag. “5G is a focus for the entire Lenovo organization –…

Google Photos now lets you DM people pictures and video

Google is rolling out a private direct messaging feature to Google Photos across Android, iOS and the web. The company says it’s not another Google chat app (sure) but is instead a quick way to share photos and videos with people over Google Photos rather than exporting them to other apps to send. The messaging service lets you send and receive between contacts, text replies, like things, and save them to your own Google Photos library. If you live in…

Microsoft Surface Pro X review: This isn’t the long-lasting tablet we were hoping for

Microsoft’s Surface Pro X was supposed to signal a new chapter for Qualcomm’s foray into Windows PCs and tablets, one where battery life was no longer the sole selling point. To its credit, the new, semi-custom Microsoft SQ1 chip (based on the Snapdragon 8cx) delivers improvements in graphics and performance. We also appreciate the appearance of USB-C and a marvelously-engineered pen cubby.   But in a baffling turn of events, the Surface Pro X falls short in battery life. Meanwhile, the app…

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 15-inch (Core i7) review: This is the one you should buy

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 3 (Core i7), also known as the Surface Laptop 3 for Business, finally delivers on what Microsoft has traditionally promised with its Surfaces: a great screen, a great keyboard, and great battery life.  The Surface Laptop 3 with Intel’s 10th-gen Core i7 chip achieves roughly 10 hours of battery life. This is more than enough to get you through your workday, and siginificantly longer than what was achieved by the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 with AMD’s Ryzen 5…

How to send large attachments with Mail Drop and other services

Apple added a clever option in its 2014 Mac operating system update for letting the Mail app handle large files. Many email servers limit the file size of attachments to something that can be quite modest—in the 10s to 100s of megabytes. This is partly to prevent spam and harassment that could clog a mail server or an email account, putting a user over their quota. But it’s also just for plain efficiency. Email is a terrible way to send…

10 Ways to Set Up Your Wi-Fi for Guests

If you envision guests using your laptop or tablet while they visit, you may want to do some housekeeping on them. For computers, it’s a good idea to create guest accounts, especially ones without administrator permissions to the machine. If you’re still using Windows 7, you’re going to want to change that. But until then, you can go to Control Panel > User Accounts and create a new account. Unfortunately, this feature is well hidden on Windows 10, and there…
