LG Launched it’s range of 2018 smart tvs earlier this year, but now they have received some voice assistant upgrades. From yesterday, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa were added across the entire OLED andf SUper UHD ThinQ suite here in Australia
“LG’s vision is to become a major name in all things AI based on our philosophy of open platform, open partnership and open connectivity,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “Beyond the unrivaled picture quality that LG’s premium TVs deliver, the Google Assistant offers even more consumers a new level of intelligence in the home, aligned with LG’s mission to improve the daily lives of its customers through forward-thinking technology.”
While Alexa is confined to TV functionality, Google Assistant offers a far wider array of possibilities when it comes to using an LG ThinQ TV. Any app that has Google Assistant functionality can be used on these TVs — including the likes of Woolworths and eBay.
Through the remote, users can now ask Google Assistant a wide range of questions, which will be answered on-screen courtesy of LG’s Smart Display. While this does include most things that it can scrape Google for an answer to — you can also ask the system what your day is like, which can prompt it to display the weather, calendar appointments and reminders.
While these more complicated queries will be handled by Google, basic television functionality requests will still run through ThinQ.
Users will also be able to use Google Assistant through their ThinQ TVs to control other devices in their home that are connected to the ecosystem. During our preview session we were able to control the lights as well as turn the kettle on.
LG is clearly pushing for its TVs to be at the centre of the modern smart home, and this level of integration is certainly a good step to achieving that.
