It’s hard to believe that Amazon started out as a humble online bookstore, as the company has since expanded to become your one-stop shop for just about anything, from electronics to groceries – and now even fast food.
That’s through Amazon Restaurants, the company’s restaurant delivery service, a rival to the likes of Deliveroo and Uber Eats that lets you order restaurant meals to be delivered to your door. Here’s everything you need to know about the service, including how to sign up, how to save money with voucher codes, and which cities Amazon Restaurants is currently available in.
What is Amazon Restaurants?
Amazon Restaurants began as a spin-off from Prime Now, letting you order cooked food to be delivered within an hour. If you’ve ever used Deliveroo or similar services, you’ll know what to expect: you can browse a variety of restaurants, from traditional takeaways to sit-down restaurants that wouldn’t normally deliver, and have a meal delivered straight to your door.
You can browse and order either through the Amazon Restaurants website or through either the main Amazon app (iTunes/Google Play) or the Prime Now app (iTunes/Google Play).
There are only two real caveats to the service. First up, like many of Amazon’s services, you need to be a Prime member to take advantage – though you can always sign up to a free trial to try it out. Second, like Prime Now, it’s not available everywhere – and it’s actually in fewer cities than Prime Now itself. Check out our guide to which cities Amazon Restaurants is available in below.
How much does it cost?
Amazon Restaurants itself is free to use, but to take advantage you’ll have to be an Amazon Prime member. You can sign up for Prime either monthly for £7.99/$12.99 per month, or annually if you pay an upfront sum of £79/$99, which works out at £6.58/$8.25 per month. Don’t forget to take advantage of the 30-day free trial first, though.
With Prime Day around the corner now’s a great excuse to sign up too, as you’ll get access to a load of limited-time offers and even exclusive products as part of Amazon’s annual mega sale.
When it comes to Amazon Restaurants itself, there’s no price markup on individual menu items, which all cost the same as they normally would in each restaurant. You will have to pay a delivery charge though – in the UK this is a flat charge of £1.99, with a £10 minimum spend, while in the US the charges vary by restaurant.
What about voucher codes?
As with a lot of online food delivery services, there are a few voucher codes around that you can use to save money on Amazon restaurants. These tend to vary a lot, but right now there’s an introductory offer in the UK for new users of the service.
Simply use the code TUCKIN at checkout for £10 off your first Restaurants order. This code should work until 31 July 2018.
The biggest obstacle for most users when it comes to Amazon Restaurants will simply be whether or not it’s available in your area. One way to check this is to put your zip/post code into the website, but Amazon also has a list of which cities are covered by the service. In the UK the list is quite short – it’s just central London basically.
Luckily the US has a few more options:
- Atlanta, GA
- Austin, TX
- Baltimore, MD
- Bay Area, CA
- Chicago, IL
- Columbus, OH
- Dallas, TX
- Houston, TX
- Las Vegas, NV
- Los Angeles and Orange County, CA
- Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY
- Miami, FL
- Minneapolis, MN
- Orlando, FL
- Phoeniz, AZ
- Portland, OR
- San Diego, CA
- Seattle, WA
- Tampa, FL
- Washington D.C.
