Apple’s fresh version of reading app for iOS and macOS has a bright aesthetic appeal and a new branding. It shared a full preview of the all-new reading app, Apple Books on June 12. As announced in WWDC the previous week, Apple Books will replace iBooks with the release of iOS 12 during this fall.
Apple has given a complete makeover to its reading app in terms of content depth and organized data segregation. Apple Books app features tabs namely – Reading Now, Library, Book Store and Audiobooks.
Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software & Services Eddy Cue commented, “Apple Books will inspire a love of reading — it puts a world of books and audiobooks right at your fingertips, whether you want to dive into your favorite story for a couple of minutes or a few hours. This is our biggest books redesign ever, and we hope this beautiful app inspires both customers and authors alike.”
As you open Apple’s revived reading app, the Reading Now tab will welcome you. Reading Now, as it sounds, will showcase all the books that the readers are currently reading or listening to. It will also specify “how much percentage” the reader has finished a specific title.
The sub-tabs, here, include Want to Read and Complete the Series or You Might Like. The former section lets you save a list of books that you want to read later on. The other tab suggests new books taking into account the books you have read/loved or lying on the wish list.
In general, the Reading Now appears similar to Amazon’s leading digital reading app, Kindle.
Again, as the title suggests, the Library tab holds a full collection of books that the reader has downloaded on the portable device or finished reading. In addition, the Library tab now displays large, easily viewable cover page of all the included titles. Besides this, the sub-section of this tab called Finished comprises the books that the reader has read in the past in a timeline pattern.
Corresponding to the growing popularity of audiobooks, Apple has introduced a dedicated tab, Audiobooks to cover this segment. The readers can now easily browse and listen to audiobooks at home or while traveling on iPhone and iPad or in the car with CarPlay.
The iPhone maker has continued to invite established authors to curate book picks for the Editorial section in the Apple Books, a step same as in iBooks.
The Book Store tab will let the Apple users peruse the entire book collection that Apple Books has to offer. This tab features sub-tabs namely, Top Charts, Staff Picks, Editorial Collections, and Special Offers & Free.
Interestingly, Apple’s revamped reading app design allows the reader to swipe between books. This will enable readers to discover new content and decide upon the next title to read. Further, as the users start reading more books from the Book Store, they will receive customized recommendations based on their purchases under the sub-section, For You.
The Cupertino Company will make the Book Store tab available in 51 countries, along with free books in 155 countries. For You service will be offered in select markets only.
