US gaming sales grew 10 percent in December to $3.3 billion, with hardware – particularly the Nintendo Switch – driving that growth, according to The NPD Group.



Call of Duty: WWII was the best-selling game in December 2017, and the year overall, according to new data from market research firm The NPD Group.

Moreover, last month marked “the eighth consecutive December that a Call of Duty franchise release has topped the sales chart,” NPD video games industry analyst Mat Piscatella said in a statement.

NBA2K18 came in second, followed by Destiny 2, Madden NFL 18, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Rounding out the list of 2017’s top games were Grand Theft Auto V at No. 6, followed by Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Star Wars: Battlefront II 2017, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8.

US sales of new gaming hardware, software, and accessories totaled $14.6 billion in 2017, an 11 percent increase over 2016, NPD said. Consumers spent $4.7 billion on gaming hardware last year, or 28 percent more than they did in 2016. Software sales (including console, portable, and PC games) increased 4 percent in 2017 to $6.7 billion.

In December alone, total video game sales reached $3.3 billion, a 10 percent year-over-year increase, with hardware – particularly the Nintendo Switch – driving that growth, NPD said. Hardware sales grew 27 percent year-over-year to $1.3 billion while software sales increased 1 percent to also total $1.3 billion.

“Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in the month of December, while Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware platform of 2017,” Piscatella said. “On a time-aligned basis through the first ten months on the market, Nintendo Switch has sold more consoles than any other platform in history.”
