Long gone are the days when kids could play pick-up baseball games in the streets until dark, returning home only when called for dinner. We’re totally headed toward the future of the “Arkangel” episode from the new Black Mirror season.
Internet of Things provider TrackNet this week introduced Tabs, an all-in-one smart home and long-range locator solution that helps keep tabs (get it?) on your family and home.
Choose from two expandable Tabs suites: the family locator kit (with hub, mini hub, wristband locator, and two object locators) or home health and security kit (with hub, motion sensor, healthy home sensor, three door and window sensors and magnets).
Each runs on a LoRaWAN network, promising coverage inside and outside the home for up to a mile; the more people who use Tabs, the larger the network grows.
Plus, the Hub acts as a bonafide Wi-Fi router, which can replace or extend an existing setup, or be used to create a new, separate network.
My parents would have jumped at the chance to track 13-year-old me (prone to hanging out with friends in the band room after school, without alerting Mom and Dad). The colorful wristband locator, with its vibrate function, is ideal for those kids who need a gentle reminder to check in or come home.
And forgetful folks can drop an object locator into a purse, backpack, or briefcase, and attach one to valuable items for easy recovery in case of theft or loss.
Cautious homeowners, meanwhile, may want to invest in the household set, which pairs with the companion app to alerts users of unexpected movement, open doors and windows, and potentially harmful air quality.
“We created Tabs with safety as a top priority and we’re excited to showcase the most robust and reliable IoT technology on the market today,” TrackNet CEO Hardy Schmidbauer said in a statement. “Tabs will quickly become the primary platform for all things related to home and family safety.”
The Tabs suites are available now to pre-order via Kickstarter, starting at $229 for the home monitoring kit and $259 for the family kit.
Early-bird backers also get a lifetime subscription to advanced Tabs features—an estimated savings of up to $480 over two years (based on a $15-$20 monthly fee for “most” home security and smart home solutions).
With more than a month left in its campaign, TrackNet has collected over half of its $50,000 goal.
